What are musculoskeletal injuries?

Musculoskeletal injuries are those affecting the bones, muscles, tendons, ligaments, or joints.

Minor injuries may heal on their own without medical intervention, but have your child see Dr. Stewart if they experience a moderate to severe injury — especially if it’s causing pain and/or a visible musculoskeletal deformity.

What are examples of musculoskeletal injuries?

Examples of musculoskeletal injuries include:

  • Sprains
  • Strains
  • Fractures
  • Tendinitis
  • Ligament injuries
  • Soft tissue tears
  • Joint injuries
  • Dislocations
  • Bursitis
  • Shoulder, elbow, and wrist injuries
  • Ankle, knee, and hip injuries
  • Shin splints

Acute injuries happen suddenly and are often temporary, while chronic injuries develop gradually over time.

Children and teenagers might become injured playing sports, working at a job, being in a car accident, or falling.

What are the symptoms of musculoskeletal injuries?

Symptoms that may develop because of a musculoskeletal injury include:

  • Mild to severe musculoskeletal pain
  • Swelling
  • Bruising
  • Stiffness
  • Redness
  • Warmth
  • Visible musculoskeletal deformity
  • Limited range of motion
  • Reduced mobility
  • Gait disturbances

The symptoms could be mild and go away on their own over time or more severe, requiring medical intervention.

How are musculoskeletal injuries diagnosed?

At Pediatric Orthopedics of Nevada, Dr. Stewart reviews your child’s symptoms, medical history, and how their injury occurred. He completes a physical exam and may order blood work, X-rays, an MRI, a CT scan, or an ultrasound to determine which treatment is the most appropriate.

How are musculoskeletal injuries treated?

Your child’s or teenager’s individualized treatment plan for musculoskeletal injuries may include:

  • Rest, ice, compression, and elevation (RICE)
  • Bracing, casting, taping, or splinting
  • Walking boot
  • Physical therapy
  • Manual manipulation
  • Medications
  • Injections
  • Assistive devices
  • Footwear changes
  • Surgery

Dr. Stewart might recommend more than one type of treatment to help your child or teen heal as quickly as possible. He monitors their progress over time and can adjust their treatment plan if necessary.

It’s also helpful to eat a balanced diet, stay as active as possible, get enough sleep, avoid smoking, and minimize stress.
